Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett

Tiffany Aching is still training to be a witch now under the tutelage of Miss Treason. When she is taken to watch the Dark Morris dance against her instruction she interferes with the rite and comes to the attention of the Wintersmith. The wintersmith becomes infatuated with her and sets out to win her heart. As the wintersmith quests to become human and winter does not end has Tiffany brought never ending winter to the lands of the circle sea or can she banish the wintersmith and return summer. It will all depend on her with the help of the Nac Mac Feegles and the Hero.

This was classic Terry Pratchett very funny and impossible to put down unitl finished. There were some new characters I really loved Miss Treason and Horace the cheese to name my favourites. I thought Miss Treason's use of Boffo was great and loved here funeral. And what book is not fantasic when you have the Nac Mac Feegles in it. The only problem with the Tiffany Aching books is that they relegate Granny Wetherwax to a secondary role.

The Shield of Thunder (Troy Trilogy Book 2) By David Gemmell
Kalliades and Banokles were among the Makene who had attacked Troy and are the only survivors when Agamemnon had their unit killed. Now they are outlaws and have joined a pirate crew but everything is about to change as the pirates catch and rape a young woman named Piria. Kalliades and Banokles rescue her and Kalliades vow to see her safely to her lover. Helikaon has been stabbed by Attalus and it looks like he is going o die. Before Attalus died he told Helikaon who had killed his father and by telling Priam whe delirious Helikaon has put Troy on the path to war.

I loved this book the story was enthralling and I love the way Gemmell was able to created great characters and stories out of historical events and mythological characters.

Lies of Light (The Watercourse Trilogy Book 2) by Philip Athans

Ivar Devorast is trying to build his canal but is surrounded by powerful enemies and very few allies. Willem Korvan is getting more pathetic and while drinking does everything he is told to do. (He seems to be losing his mind) Phyrea is hanging on the line between sanity and madness. And Marek Rymut is gaining power, manipulating everyone and havin everything happen as he wishes it.

I liked Whisper of Waves but was not fussed with this book Willem and Phyrea just really irritate me and it ruins the book for me. Every character in this book is a bit strange but I like Ivar as a character a genius that does not care about anything other that his project.

Into a Dark Realm (The Darkwar Book 2) by Raymond E. Feist

This book starts with the Conclave hunting down and killing the remaining Nighthawks. Then head off on different tasks. Pug, Nakor, Manus and Bek prepare to travel to the Dasati Realm, We are introduced to a young Dastai warrior Valko who has an important destiny. Miranda hunts for Leso Varen on Kelewan. Jommy, Zane and Tad are sent to the Roldem University to learn thing necessary for when they are among the leader's f the Conclave. And Kasper has a minor adventure hunting for Jojanna and Jorgen to repay his debt to them for helping him when he was banished to Novindus.

This book was great the story had me hooked from the very start and it is certainly up to the high quality that I expect from Feist. The one problem I have is that it does not seem to end we are left stranded in the middle of the story where as I expect a Feist book to have a story arc that concludes with the book. Usually with them coming home to prepare for the next task they need to under take. There is also a suprise at the end. (Though it is not really a suprise as I have been expecting it since the Serpentwar saga)

Sourcery by Terry Pratchett

Ipslore the Red was the eighth son of an eighth son and a wizard against the Lore of Magic he got married and had eight sons. He has unleashed something that should never have returned to the world a wizard squared, a source of magic, a SOURCERER. Cheating death and Hiding in his sons staff Ipslore guides his sons destiny to wear the Unseen University's Archchancellor's hat and have the wizards of the world bow to him.

As all the bugs and rodents flee the Unseen University ahead of the sourcerer's arrival they are joined by Rincewind the wizards. But Rincewind is unable to escape to the boring life he wants because of the interference of Conina daughter of Cohen the Barbarian under the instructions of the Archchancellor's hat which is determined not to be worn by a sourcerer. Now Rincewind must once again suffer that most terrible of things an adventure. Is the world going to end as the Archchancellor's hat predicts or will Rincewind somehow save the world form the Sourcerer and from the creatures of the Dungeon Dimensions who he has drawn the attention of.

This is a good book (not one of my personal favourite Pratchett books but that is simply because I prefer the Guards books) lots of the great humour that you expect from Pratchett and the antics of Rincewind are always entertaining. Once again though I have noticed reading this book how much Pratchett's writting style has evolved over time.

In the Claws of the Tiger (The War-Torn Book 3) by James Wyatt

Janik Martell has been summoned by the Keeper of the Flame (But is only going because he was also asked by an old friend Dania) on the way he is attacked by a warforged warrior sent by his long time enemy Krael Kavarat and gathers his old friend the elf wizard Mathas. The Keeper asks him to go to Mel-Aqat where on a previous visit he supposedly released an evil spirit. Janik has no intention of returning there, as his last visit to Mel-Aqat was when his life had fallen apart. When last there his wife had betrayed him to Krael Kavarat a loss from which he has not recovered. His old friend Dania now a paladin of the Silver Flame manages to persuade him to go. When they set out they find that Krael Kavarat is also returning to Mel-Aqat and it is now a race to see who gets there first.

I quite enjoyed this book there is nothing special about it but it is a good book to spend a few hour reading. My main problem is that the characters can be irritating in there idiocy and there are a few points like when Janik changes his mind to go to Mel-Aqat to me I can not understand why he was persuaded to change his mind.

Morningstar by David Gemmell

Jarek Mace is a Thief, Murderer and Adulterer with no interest in anyone other then himself and what he wants. He has the misfortune (From his point of view) to meet Owen Odell the bard. The land becomes embroiled in war and Mace hides out in the forest but one-day the conquerors men come and take all his gold. Mace gathers the villagers and hunts down the soldiers calling himself the Morningstar and kills the soldiers regaining the gold. This is the point everything goes wrong for him his gold is taken by villagers praising him as a hero and from now on everything he does is misunderstood and his legend as a hero grows. Mace is now trapped because of his growing fame he is being hunted by Count Azrek and this forces him into actions that make his legend grow he is now in a cycle he cannot break.

This is one of my favourite books by David Gemmell I think Jarek Mace is one of the best and funniest anti-heroes ever. I find myself feeling so sorry for him trapped as a hero when he does not care a jot for anyone else yet is forced to take actions that have no profit for himslf. My copy of this book is getting tattered from being read so much.
